birds of prey rotten tomatoes
References to the Joker and Batman are few and far between. The first reviews of the comic book movie are on the positive side, emphasizing the ensemble cast (including the villains), the action aided by John Wick director Chad Stahelski, and the general fun had by all involved, especially the audience. Fans were therefore understandably excited for Ritchie’s latest film, The Gentlemen, which looked to be a return to form for him, and most were fairly satisfied with what they got. – Helen O’Hara, Time Out, Yan may be a newcomer to the big-budget blockbuster, but she brings an assured confidence to each stylistic choice. With impeccable comedic timing, the young actress holds her own. – Molly Freeman, ScreenRant, The main heroine ensemble actors all breathe a wonderful amount of life into little-known characters overdue for mainstream attention. Rotten Tomatoes. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter. If any of the plot feels familiar, that’s probably because it’s the kind of baseline revenge thriller narrative we’ve seen play out in countless other films, and critics didn’t feel that Bloodshot had quite enough to set it apart from the others. Her action scenes have a deftly detonating visual spaciousness. Don't have an account? Here's what the Rotten Tomatoes reviews are saying about Birds of Prey. Almost definitely not. Critics say it’s colorful, briskly paced, full of stellar action, and a great showcase for Robbie’s endless charisma, and it’s available for digital purchase now. – Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm, Directing her first studio feature, Cathy Yan keeps it all hurtling along with impeccable ferocity. – Kirsten Acuna, Insider, The movie would have been so much better had it simplified its story by half. – Owen Gleiberman, Variety, Unfortunately, the Birds of Prey are the ones who get shortchanged by the ambitious scope… you can’t help but wish [the movie] leaned a little harder into the team-up aspect of the title. The story centers on a married couple (Ferrell and Louis-Dreyfus) whose relationship suffers when the husband abandons the family during an avalanche scare, and critics say the new version doesn’t quite have the same bite as the original, in part because Ferrell’s husband character is a bit too much of a dolt to dislike, undermining the satire at its core. Like this? – Kirsten Acuna, Insider, Winstead’s self-serious, mafia-bred, crossbow-toting Huntress appears to be ripped out of another movie entirely. It’s a remake of the 2014 Swedish film Force Majeure, brought to you by writer-directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (who together won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for The Descendants back in 2011), and it stars comedy powerhouses Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. – Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm, Fans will undoubtedly fall in love with Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress. Conventional wisdom seems to be that if you’re a young toddler, you won’t mind the juvenile, slapsticky humor so much, and all the funny talking animals should keep you distracted enough not to care about the muddled storytelling; if you’re any older than that, though, good luck. – Kirsten Acuna, Insider, Birds of Prey provides a perfect setup for a host of other intriguing spinoffs in the DC cinematic universe — can we request Poison Ivy next? Margot Robbie made her debut as Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad, which most people agreed was an ill-conceived and poorly executed mess that only served to illustrate why Robbie should get her own movie. – Hannah Woodhead, Little White Lies, In terms of DCEU films, McGregor’s Sionis and Messina’s Zsasz are my favorite villains…[with] some of the best villain moments seen in a comic book film to-date. Matthew McConaughey takes center stage as an American marijuana kingpin in London who decides he wants to go straight, which attracts the attention from a number of interested parties who either want to buy him out of his empire, expose his secrets, or dispose of him and take over. – Britany Murphy, Geeks of Color, The film also benefits from two first-rate villains… worthy opponents to Quinn, delighting in violence for the sake of violence but crucially grounded in reality. It may provide a few thrills here and there for viewers who aren’t asking for much, but let’s just say this one was probably destined to hit the digital market sooner rather than later even if current circumstances hadn’t been what they are. – Owen Gleiberman, Variety, Those hoping for a Deadpool-like fusion of mayhem and wit should lower their expectations. Available now on: FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu. Available now on: FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu. – Courtney Howard, Fresh Fiction, Hodson’s script is packed with the kind of small actions and moments of recognition that only a film made by women would ever think to include. – Kirsten Acuna, Insider, Victor’s obsessive desire to please his boss and Roman’s unchecked narcissism combine to create a dynamic duo who are pure nightmare fuel. It’s one of the best displays of fight sequences in a superhero movie to date. In most cases, an inspirational sports movie opening in early March isn’t likely to be a winner, so to speak, even if it does boast a big name like Ben Affleck on the marquee. All rights reserved. – Kirsten Acuna, Insider, Birds of Prey stands on its own more than most comic book movies. – Angie Han, Mashable, Birds of Prey is a true ensemble in the sense that it doesn’t work because one person or one part is excellent, but because they all are. – Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm, Boasts some of the most inventive fight sequences ever seen in a comic book movie… The smackdowns have a tangible, bone-crunching quality that sets them apart from the overly CGIed slugfests found in many other superhero movies lately. and the Terms and Policies, The good people behind the latest adaptation of the Jack London novel The Call of the Wild decided to forego all that unpleasantness and make Buck a CGI character instead. – Kirsten Acuna, Insider, No, [but] you’ll have a deeper understanding of [Harley] and DC characters like Black Mask, Zsasz, and Black Canary if you’ve watched animated DC cartoons, played popular games like Arkham City, and watched the CW’s Arrow. Available now on: FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu. Available Friday, 3/27 on: FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu. – Susana Polo, Polygon, It’s not quite John Wick, but crisp camerawork and playful choreography place Birds of Prey comfortably above the muddy CG action of an Avengers: Endgame or, God forbid, a Suicide Squad. – Kirsten Acuna, Insider, Birds of Prey left me wanting [a sequel], which is about the most anyone can hope for in a big-screen comics adaptation. The last time we got a major wide release in movie theaters was two weeks ago, when we had three, and one of them was this superhero movie starring Vin Diesel. Here’s what critics are saying about Birds of Prey: Rights so many of the DCEU’s wrongs, trading CGI for carefully choreographed fight scenes and breathing new life into a stagnant genre. – Laura Prudom, IGN, Huntress is the least developed of all the lead characters… but in her few appearances, Winstead steals the show. – Susana Polo, Polygon, The actresses who come together to form Harley’s posse… have presence to spare, but you wish they’d been given more to do. – Angie Han, Mashable, Rather than the paint-by-numbers girl power of Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman, Birds of Prey presents flawed, multi-faceted women as more than an afterthought in male-driven narratives. Available now on: FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu. – Gavia Baker-Whitelaw, The Daily Dot, [It’s] DC’s R-rated answer to Deadpool in terms of rampant cursing, in-universe commentary and clever pop-culture riffs. Copyright ©  2018 Fandango. Apa stars as real-life Christian music megastar Jeremy Camp, who moves to California, meets and falls in love with his first wife (Britt Robertson), and finds his — and her — faith tested when she’s diagnosed with terminal cancer. – Susana Polo, Polygon, [It’s] a spinoff/sequel that requires no knowledge of its mediocre predecessor, Suicide Squad. Talk to anyone who saw 2016’s Suicide Squad, and they’re likely to tell you the best part about the movie was Margot Robbie’s performance as Joker’s best girl, Harley Quinn.Warner Bros. clearly knew this, too, considering the studio announced a Harley Quinn spinoff even before Suicide Squad was released. As more and more people are compelled to practice social distancing and encouraged to stay home, as movie theaters temporarily shutter their doors, and as studios continue to pull their scheduled 2020 films off the release calendar, we’ve decided to reformat this weekly Critics Consensus column to focus on titles that are newly available on the home entertainment market. That’s why it was kind of a nice surprise when Gavin O’Connor’s new drama The Way Back turned out to be more than just another Inspirational Sports Movie. – Molly Freeman, ScreenRant, Not only does Cathy Yan’s female-fronted, feminist feature capture one woman’s resilience… it symbolically represents that we women can overcome our worst starts. – Kirsten Acuna, Insider, The movie is a stunning showcase for Margot Robbie, who commands the screen and gives her damaged protagonist all the dimension she deserves. The success of Wonder Woman proved women-helmed, women-led superhero movies could be immensely successful, and now Warner Bros. and DC continue to lead in that arena with Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey, with Margot Robbie reprising her Suicide Squad role as Gotham City antihero Harley Quinn. This small, faith-based drama was also released the same weekend when Bloodshot came out (the third wide release that week was The Hunt, which arrived on digital last week), and it largely plays out like a Christian Nicholas Sparks movie, even though it’s based on a true story.
