[1] Donoghue conceived the story after hearing about five-year-old Felix in the Fritzl case, and a 2008 court case in which an Austrian woman and her children are held captive for eight years in a small room similar to the one in the novel. [2], The novel was longlisted for the 2011 Orange Prize[3] and won the 2011 Commonwealth Writers' Prize regional prize (Caribbean and Canada); was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2010 and was shortlisted for the 2010 Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize[4] and the 2010 Governor General's Awards.[5]. Room(London: Picador; Toronto: HarperCollins Canada; New York: Little Brown, 2010), my Man-Booker-shortlisted seventh novel, is the story of a five-year-old called Jack, who lives in a single room with his Ma and has never been outside. It's nice to not be dragged down by all the complexities of an adult narrator for a change and I know I would have given this story less stars if it were told through his mother's eyes. Raised by his mother, who was kidnapped at nineteen, imprisoned in a small metal garden shed that had been made escape proof. Old Nick brings them food and necessities. At the same time, Jack himself is growing and changing as his world expands. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. NO! As I hoped and expected - some events were simplified or merged to make a shorter screenplay, and the book contains more detail, but otherwise the story is identical. Because it is all he has ever known, Jack believes that only Room and the things it contains (including himself and Ma) are "real." There is no privacy, no escape.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 13, 2016. A novel narrated by a five year old? He and Ma return to the scene of their captivity, but Jack no longer feels any emotional attachment toward it and is able to say his goodbyes before he and Ma leave Room for the final time.

I'm not a kid person at all so do not think you need to be a mother to appreciate this story. The effort deserves much applause indeed. Wow, what a story! Narrated by the boy himself, it’s a child’s eye view of a small world housing a great deal of imagination, pain and love. Hearing that it's being made into a movie is intriguing. I think it's meant to seem tedious... it helps the reader relate to some of the frustrations and limitations the mother must be feelings on a regular basis, having known a world outside Room. I’ve recently concluded though that I don’t enjoy books narrated by children. Based on, or ‘inspired by’ shocking cases like that of Josef Fritzl, Room is the story of a boy, Jack, born and raised with his captive mother in a 12 foot square room.

In all the tragedies that I've read about, manmade or otherwise, no act of violence has ever made my heart wrench more than the prolonged imprisonment of a human being for sexual purposes. At some points, I was too anxious to carry on reading for fear it wouldn't go the way I wanted and very few books I've read have done that to me!! The overly deconstructionist prose is often times incoherent, then, just out of the blue, the kid gives us a brave listing of all the components that may carry with them a certain patina of poetry—in other words the authentic. There's a problem loading this menu right now. I've read about a lot of different crimes, in far more detail than I'd care to remember. For some, these books may be predictable, devoid of any interest. To get the free app, enter your mobile phone number. In spite of his inability to communicate effectively, Jack describes the route of Room to an officer to free Ma. Ever since its Booker nomination (it made the shortlist). The film was a critical and commercial success and received four nominations at the 88th Academy Awards including for Best Picture and winning Best Actress for Larson.
